Design Technology Technician (IBDP/HSD)

About the role

The Design Technology Technician supports the IBDP and HSD Design & Technology curriculum by preparing and maintaining workshop resources, operating specialised equipment, and assisting staff and students during practical sessions.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare tools, materials and equipment for lessons, including wood, metal, plastics, art supplies and electronic components.
• Set up, operate and maintain workshop machinery such as saws, drills, sanders, laser cutters, 3D printers and CNC machines.
• Conduct routine checks, maintenance and safety inspections, reporting any faults to the Head of Department.
• Order, inventory and manage stock levels of consumables and tools to ensure lesson readiness.
• Assist teachers during practical sessions, demonstrating safe use of equipment and supporting student projects.
• Maintain a clean, organised, hazard‑free workshop environment and ensure proper storage of hazardous materials.
• Provide basic IT support for DT software, including CAD/CAM programs and file preparation for laser cutting and 3D printing.
• Keep accurate records of equipment usage, maintenance logs and safety inspections.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum three years of experience in a school workshop or similar environment.
• Strong understanding of modern design technology processes, digital tools and material handling.
• Excellent communication, organisational and classroom‑management skills.
• Reflective, collaborative attitude with a commitment to continuous improvement.

• Operation of laser cutters.

• Proficiency with CAD/CAM software.
• Experience with 3D printing slicer software.
