Sports Medicine Physician

About the role

AZF Aspetar is recruiting a Sports Medicine Physician who will provide reactive and proactive care to athletes and non-athletes through the hospital outpatients clinic and screening department, and contribute to the National Sports Medicine Program and the development of sports medicine services in Qatar.

Key responsibilities

• Diagnose and treat sports- or activity-related injuries and illnesses, and supervise the full rehabilitation process
• Educate athletes on their injuries, provide counselling and mental strategies to cope with setbacks, and give nutritional guidance during rehabilitation
• Order and interpret diagnostic imaging and laboratory tests; educate athletes about doping control when prescribing medication
• Evaluate athletes before competition for injury risk, and advise coaches and trainers on athletes' medical conditions
• Prescribe exercise programmes, coordinate care with other specialists, and advise on return-to-play decisions
• Provide player medical care at sports events, develop emergency injury procedures, and conduct research into prevention and treatment of injuries
• Take part in the department's research and clinical education programmes, and in professional development activities
• Teach and mentor clinical fellows, residents, interns and students, and guide the development plans of direct reports

Required profile

• Recognized basic medical qualification such as an MBBS or equivalent
• Formal specialization in Sports Medicine expected; accredited postgraduate training in this field preferred
• Applicants from countries where Sports Medicine is not formally established will be assessed individually
• Medical licensing requirements of the local authority must be fulfilled
• 12-15 years of experience, of which at least 5 years of clinical Sports Medicine experience, preferably in a similar industry
• Ability to keep up to date with clinical and administrative paperwork, and willingness to work shifts and a 24-hour callback roster

• Highly skilled in diagnosing and managing acute and gradual-onset sports injuries, and in assessing athletes' readiness to compete
• Skilled in diagnosing and managing sport-related conditions such as infections, respiratory, gastrointestinal and cardiac conditions
• Expertise in caring for elite, professional and recreational athletes
• Interest in and use of international clinical practice guidelines, expert consensus and evidence-based medicine in sport and exercise medicine
