Laboratory Health Safety Specialist

About the role

The Laboratory Health Safety Specialist will lead the development and implementation of health and safety programs across our organization’s laboratories. This senior position ensures compliance with legislation, promotes a strong safety culture, and reduces occupational risks through audits, training, and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain a Laboratory Safety Manual for each lab in collaboration with researchers and Lab Safety Managers.
• Act as the technical authority on health and safety codes, standards, and regulations, providing policy guidance and verification.
• Conduct safety and health audits, risk assessments, and investigations of incidents, recommending corrective actions.
• Lead training programs for staff at all levels on safety responsibilities and best practices.
• Monitor compliance with legislation, track performance metrics, and report safety performance to management and regulators.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Public Health, Engineering or related field.
• Minimum 10 years of experience in health and safety management, preferably in laboratory, university or medical settings.
• Proven ability to work with senior managers, lead teams, and communicate effectively in written and verbal form.
• Demonstrated commitment to professional development and staying current with safety legislation.

Required skills

• Deep expertise in laboratory hazards, controls, and compliance requirements (ESH technical competence).
• Knowledge of quality management systems and their integration with safety programs.
• Project management capability to plan, execute, and monitor safety initiatives.
• Strong analytical skills for risk assessment, data interpretation, and trend analysis.
• Excellent written communication for preparing reports, policies, and technical documentation.
