Protection Engineer – Site Supervision

About the role

The Protection Engineer – Site Supervision is responsible for overseeing the testing, commissioning, and maintenance of protection systems across substations, power plants, and transmission networks. The role ensures that protection schemes operate reliably, comply with standards, and are safely executed on‑site.

Key responsibilities

• Review and approve contractors' design drawings, inspection & testing procedures, FAT/SAT formats, and method statements.
• Verify relay setting calculations and transformer current/voltage adequacy checks for existing and new devices.
• Witness testing and commissioning of protection equipment, ensuring alignment with client specifications and protection philosophy.
• Assist clients with implementation of critical protection functions such as cable differential, distance, transformer differential, bus‑bar differential, and reactor differential.
• Configure protection and control signals for SCADA (IEC 61850) and national control centre (IEC 104) interfaces.
• Supervise AVR scheme testing for transformers and reactors and validate protection schematics.
• Troubleshoot protection‑related faults in substations and provide corrective actions.
• Review contractor method statements to guarantee safe and reliable stability testing of cables, transformers, reactors, and busbars.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Power Engineering (or equivalent).
• Minimum 6 years of experience in protection and control engineering for substations, transmission/distribution, or power plants.
• Hands‑on experience with major protection relays and a solid understanding of relay coordination, fault analysis, and power system protection schemes.
• Familiarity with industry standards (IEC, IEEE) and local utility regulations.
• Strong problem‑solving, troubleshooting, communication, and site‑management abilities.
