Research Specialist Level 4 – Mathematical Modeling

About the role

The Research Specialist Level 4 will work with minimal supervision from the Principal Investigator to design, execute, and interpret mathematical modeling studies focused on infectious disease epidemiology. This full‑time position supports a range of projects, from HIV dynamics to broader communicable and non‑communicable disease analyses, and contributes to grant writing and scientific dissemination.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in the design of epidemiologic studies that incorporate mathematical modeling.
• Develop deterministic, stochastic compartmental, and individual‑based models for HIV and other infections using tools such as Berkeley Madonna, Matlab, and Mathematica.
• Conduct literature reviews, meta‑analyses, and statistical analyses to inform model parameters.
• Write and maintain detailed records, logs, and summary reports of data processing and model outcomes.
• Prepare draft research plans for grant applications and contribute to manuscript preparation.
• Present findings at scientific meetings and support other lab staff as needed.

Required profile

• At least 5 years of relevant experience or an MSc in a quantitative discipline (mathematics, statistics, theoretical physics, etc.).
• Working knowledge of the epidemiology of communicable and non‑communicable diseases is desirable.
• Demonstrated initiative, strong written and spoken English, and ability to communicate scientific results effectively.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Berkeley Madonna, Matlab, Mathematica, C, C++, and Fortran.
• Advanced computer skills for data entry, troubleshooting, and analysis.
• Experience using Microsoft Office and Windows environments.
