Open Rank Faculty Position in Political Economy (Global South)

About the role

Northwestern University in Qatar is seeking an outstanding colleague for a full‑time open‑rank faculty position in Political Economy, to be appointed in the Liberal Arts Program. The role focuses on critical, global, comparative, and transnational perspectives on the Global South.

Key responsibilities

• Teach two courses per semester, including core disciplinary courses, electives aligned with research, and university‑wide requirements such as the “Ways of Knowing” and Doha Seminar honors courses.
• Develop and deliver graduate seminars, executive‑education classes, and interdisciplinary minor courses (e.g., Africana Studies, AI and Media Studies, Media and Politics).
• Contribute to undergraduate and future graduate education, program development, and institutional service.
• Collaborate with NU‑Q’s Institute for Advanced Study of the Global South, Artificial Intelligence and Media Lab, and Media Majlis Museum.

Required profile

• Active research agenda examining political economy from a critical, global, comparative, or transnational perspective, with a focus on the Global South.
• Expertise in areas such as critical development studies, feminist political economy, post‑/de‑colonial political economy, south‑south relations, media political economy, climate and extractivism, labor regimes, agrarian economies, or politics of debt.
• Background in political science, economics, media studies, global studies, sociology, history, or anthropology.
• Linguistic competence and field experience in the research area.
• Demonstrated research record commensurate with rank or a promising trajectory for recent PhDs, plus a strong commitment to teaching, mentoring, and shared governance.
