Assistant Head of Primary – Student Life

About the role

The Assistant Head of Primary – Student Life supports the Head of Primary in safeguarding, wellbeing and behaviour management across the primary school. This senior leadership position combines strategic planning with up to 50% classroom teaching to maintain a strong link to day‑to‑day learning.

Key responsibilities

• Lead school‑wide student wellbeing and positive behaviour systems, using proactive, preventative and restorative approaches.
• Ensure consistent application of safeguarding policies and pastoral care across all primary year groups.
• Monitor attendance and punctuality, coordinating interventions and follow‑up actions.
• Oversee student transitions within primary and between school divisions.
• Coordinate support services such as counselling, inclusion, learning support and EAL.
• Contribute to strategic planning, policy development and school improvement initiatives focused on student culture and engagement.
• Maintain an active teaching load (up to 50%) to stay connected with classroom practice.

Required profile

• Demonstrated experience in primary education leadership or senior teaching roles.
• Strong knowledge of safeguarding, student wellbeing and behaviour management frameworks.
• Ability to work collaboratively with academic leaders, support staff and external partners.
• Commitment to fostering an inclusive, positive and high‑expectation school culture.
