Engineering Lab Safety Specialist

About the role

The Engineering Lab Safety Specialist will monitor and coordinate safety risks across the university’s research laboratories, ensuring compliance with international, local and institutional regulations. This role protects staff, students and visitors from health and safety exposures while supporting the university’s operational continuity.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor, analyse and interpret environmental, health and safety regulations (OSHA, ANSI, EPA, NFPA, QCD, MME) and ensure university compliance.
• Collaborate with lab managers, facilities teams and HSE focal points to embed safety practices into daily operations.
• Conduct safety inspections, laboratory audits and fire‑risk assessments; prepare detailed reports and recommendations for management.
• Maintain and update the HSE risk database, tracking hazards and mitigation actions.
• Plan and implement special risk‑management projects and develop chemical‑hygiene plans and SOPs.
• Design and deliver training programmes on chemical hygiene, environmental protection and safe work practices.
• Investigate accidents, near‑misses and incidents, produce root‑cause reports and monitor corrective actions.
• Maintain accurate records and prepare documentation for internal and external stakeholders.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, chemical or environmental engineering, or a related field.
• 6–8 years of full‑time experience in an HSE role within an academic research environment.
• Professional safety certifications (e.g., CSP, CHP, CIH, NEBOSH IGC, CHST, PMP) are preferred.
