Materials Engineer – Energy Sector (Middle East)

About the role
The Materials Engineer will ensure the technical integrity of plant equipment, materials and spare parts throughout procurement and maintenance cycles for a leading energy company in the Middle East. You will work closely with procurement, engineering and maintenance teams to resolve technical issues and drive continuous improvement.
Key responsibilities
- Evaluate vendor bids for plant equipment, spares and material supply contracts.
- Review supplier drawings, documentation and technical submissions for compliance with engineering specifications.
- Assess alternative technical proposals for integrity, engineering and operational suitability.
- Approve post‑order manufacturing drawings and documentation.
- Lead re‑engineering of obsolete equipment by recommending modern technologies.
- Identify opportunities to improve specifications, engineering standards and equipment reliability.
- Collaborate with procurement, maintenance, engineering, vendors and manufacturers to resolve technical issues.
- Review and approve material deviations, certification changes and specification waiver requests.
- Manage technical evaluation activities to meet project schedules.
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring and guidance to junior engineers.
Required profile
- Degree in Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in supply chain, maintenance or engineering, preferably in Oil & Gas.
- At least 5 years in a supervisory or technical leadership role.
- Strong background in engineering design, equipment specification and technical evaluation.
- Extensive knowledge of international engineering standards and industry codes.
- Experience with reviewing and approving procurement and construction drawings (equipment, piping, P&IDs, plot plans).
- Proven ability to develop material requisitions, equipment descriptions and drive standardisation initiatives.
Required skills
- API, ASME, ASTM, ANSI, ISA, IEEE, IEC, NEMA, NFPA, ATEX, BASEEFA, TEMA, BS standards.
- ERP systems.
- Microsoft Office suite.
