Specialist – Poison Control

About the role

The Specialist – Poison Control Center provides expert clinical assessment, case‑management advice, and follow‑up care for emergency and informational calls received from the public or health‑care professionals. Working with minimal supervision, the specialist supports the poison control team and contributes to clinical toxicology services.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver verbal and written clinical information and case‑management recommendations for emergency and informational telephone calls.
• Assess the seriousness of poisoning incidents, determine appropriate level of care, and decide if referral to a health‑care provider is needed.
• Document all interactions in the center’s computerized medical record system and conduct follow‑up calls to monitor patient status.
• Provide bedside or telephone management recommendations for consultative cases under the oversight of a supervising medical toxicologist.
• Precept PharmD students, pharmacy residents, emergency‑medicine residents, and other trainees during toxicology rotations.
• Prepare and deliver lectures on poisoning topics to internal and external audiences.
• Research medical literature, develop treatment protocols, and create reference material on new drugs.
• Participate in clinical research projects, outreach education, and staff training activities.

Required profile

• PharmD degree (Clinical Pharmacist qualification).
• 5–7 years of relevant experience in an accredited Poison Control Center or in acute/critical care settings.
• Demonstrated ability to independently assess poisoning incidents and provide accurate clinical advice.
