Academic Advisor for Journalism & Communication Programs

About the role

The Academic Advisor will guide and support undergraduate students enrolled in the journalism and communication programs at Northwestern University in Qatar. Reporting to the Director of Academic Advising and Student Success, the advisor will ensure students understand degree requirements, academic policies, and available support resources.

Key responsibilities

• Provide informed undergraduate advising on majors, minors, course registration, and academic policies.
• Conduct orientation sessions, student meetings, and workshops on academic success.
• Monitor student progress toward graduation and maintain accurate advising records.
• Collaborate with academic program directors and the Division for Student Affairs on registration needs and career planning.
• Utilize advising technology platforms such as STELLIC and PeopleSoft to manage student data.
• Process accommodation requests and participate in student academic events.
• Organize student success workshops and contribute to process development for advising.
• Assist with major/minor declaration processes and support transfer or study abroad status changes.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in media, journalism, communication, or a related field from an accredited U.S. or American‑style university.
• 1–3 years of academic advising experience in an American‑style institution, with strong collaboration skills.
• Preferred: advanced degree and 3–5 years of advising experience, fluency in Arabic, and experience working in the Arab world or Global South.
