IT Lab Assistant

About the role

The IT Lab Assistant provides day‑to‑day technical support, maintenance and operational management for computer laboratories that serve BSc Computer Science and MSc Cybersecurity programmes. The role ensures that lab infrastructure, specialised software and virtualised environments are secure, up‑to‑date and ready for teaching and research.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare, configure and maintain undergraduate and postgraduate labs, including virtualised environments (VMware, VirtualBox, Proxmox, Hyper‑V) for ethical hacking, penetration testing and malware analysis.
• Provide real‑time technical assistance to faculty and students, troubleshoot hardware, OS (Windows, Linux, macOS) and network issues, and support remote lab access.
• Perform system administration tasks such as OS deployment, software updates, security patching, backup and recovery, and manage user accounts and access controls.
• Maintain accurate inventory of hardware, software licences and peripherals, log issues via the university ticketing system and ensure health, safety and security compliance.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or Higher Diploma in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, IT or Cybersecurity.
• Preferred certifications: CCNA, CEH or equivalent entry‑level cybersecurity credentials.

Required skills

• Advanced Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, Kali) and Windows/Windows Server administration.
• Virtualisation tools: VMware, VirtualBox, Proxmox, Hyper‑V, Docker.
• Security tools: Wireshark, Nmap, Metasploit, Burp Suite, Snort/Suricata.
• Networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, firewalls.
• Scripting: Python, Bash, PowerShell; programming basics in C++, Java.
