Principal Safety Engineer

About the role

Worley is seeking a Principal Safety Engineer to lead safety and risk engineering activities across onshore and offshore oil & gas projects. The role involves ensuring technical integrity of safety deliverables, conducting hazard analyses, and supporting the standardisation of equipment specifications.

Key responsibilities

• Identify safety engineering scope from basis of design and lead HAZID & HAZOP workshops.
• Perform design safety reviews, including layout, EERA, ESSA, fire & gas, dropped object and hazardous area studies.
• Develop and document safety & risk philosophies, design requirements for safety systems, and active/passive fire protection designs.
• Conduct formal safety assessments, classify hazardous areas, and specify escape routes and safety equipment.
• Ensure deliverables meet quality assurance standards through checking, peer reviews and squad checking.
• Maintain lessons‑learned registers and update safety‑critical element performance standards.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering.
• Mandatory MME engineering accreditation (or willingness to obtain during probation).
• Extensive experience in safety design for onshore/offshore oil & gas brownfield projects.
• Background in engineering consultancy within a multidisciplinary environment.

Required skills

• HAZID and HAZOP facilitation.
• Safety & risk assessments and formal safety assessments.
• Active and passive fire protection design (e.g., PipeNet).
• Hazardous area classification and safety equipment specification.
• Familiarity with international standards such as NFPA, IEC61508, EI15.
