Laboratory Chemical Safety Specialist

About the role

The Laboratory Chemical Safety Specialist supports the Laboratory Safety Manager in protecting human health by developing, implementing, and monitoring safety and health programs across research laboratories. The role ensures compliance with regulations, conducts audits, and drives continuous improvement in chemical safety practices.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in creating Laboratory Safety Manuals for each lab and oversee their implementation.
• Audit laboratory safety plans, conduct site inspections, and verify compliance with policies, codes, and standards.
• Establish safe chemical storage volumes and define storage requirements for consumables, research facilities, and warehouses.
• Coordinate hazardous substance disposal with Environmental Programs and verify subcontractor compliance.
• Perform risk assessments, investigate incidents, and recommend preventive measures.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of applicable regulations and document findings in the issues management system.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, or related field.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in laboratory safety or occupational health & safety.
• Preferred certifications: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), NEBOSH, IOSH, or Hazardous Materials Management.

Required skills

• Chemical safety management and regulatory knowledge.
• Audit and assessment expertise, including risk analysis.
• Proficiency with safety management software, databases, and documentation.
• Competency in risk assessment methodologies.
• Familiarity with laboratory equipment, ventilation systems, and hazardous material handling.
