Assistant Head of Primary - Teaching and Learning

About the role

The Assistant Head of Primary – Teaching & Learning provides proactive instructional leadership across the Primary School. Reporting to the Head of Primary, the role supports a culture of growth, purpose, and belonging while ensuring high‑quality teaching and learning aligned with the school’s American curriculum framework.

Key responsibilities

• Partner with the Head of Primary and fellow Assistant Heads to shape strategic planning, policy development, and delivery of school priorities.
• Lead and model high‑quality instructional practice, conducting learning walks, classroom observations, and feedback cycles.
• Monitor, evaluate, and enhance teaching methods to drive student engagement, progress, and achievement.
• Maintain a safe, inclusive environment and uphold safeguarding policies for all Primary students.
• Oversee the appropriate use, storage, and care of curriculum and year‑level resources.
• Stay current with educational best practices and statutory requirements.
• Maintain an active teaching commitment of up to 50% to stay connected with classroom practice.

Required profile

• Demonstrated experience in primary education leadership or senior teaching roles.
• Strong commitment to safeguarding and student welfare.
• Ability to collaborate with senior leaders and contribute to strategic school initiatives.
• Excellent communication skills with staff, students, and families.
• Reflective practitioner focused on continuous improvement.

Required skills

• Knowledge of American curriculum frameworks for primary education.
• Experience conducting instructional observations and providing professional feedback.
• Familiarity with best‑practice research in teaching and learning.
