Production Engineer (Welding)

About the role

The role ensures that all welding and related activities in the yard comply with applicable codes, standards and rules, and updates yard welding processes to meet customer requirements and best practice. It covers technical and technological solutions for production planning, leading work teams and controlling the process so that work meets high-quality, auditable standards and contract scope. The project lasts 6 months and is extendable; only local applicants are sought.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure welding process compliance with national and international standards, class rules and legislation
• Provide technical feedback to the project team on contract welding requirements and help develop welding sequences
• Coordinate with third-party inspectors and issue work orders for inspections and testing
• Develop procedures, techniques, checklists and sequences, and keep welding engineering documents up to date
• Plan and calculate welding consumables, machines and procedures, and monitor their issuance and use
• Maintain and revalidate welder qualification records and plan welder upgrades
• Monitor welding equipment validation and calibration, and daily manpower allocation
• Monitor subcontractors and progress, and coordinate with planning teams and commercial on man-hours and KPIs
• Study new enquiries, conduct zone walkthroughs and report on progress
• Identify cost-reduction and productivity improvements, and encourage innovation and R&D

Required profile

• Degree or diploma in welding, metallurgical or mechanical engineering
• AWS/CSWIP certification and knowledge of international codes and class rules on welding and testing
• At least 5 years of experience as a steel works welding lead in ship repair, shipbuilding or offshore fabrication
• Ability to read and follow job specifications and drawings

Required skills

• Knowledge of welding processes, consumables, sequences and non-destructive testing methods
• Good command of MS Office
• Project management software knowledge is an added advantage
