Senior Welding Engineer

About the role

A Senior Welding Engineer is needed to review customer contract specifications, drawings and code requirements and define the welding procedures and welder qualifications required. The role provides welding engineering support to teams fabricating equipment in line with applicable codes and project specifications, leads failure and root cause analyses on welding issues, and keeps the team adhering to safety standards. It is a 6-month project, extendable, and the employer is looking for local candidates only.

Key responsibilities

• Review tender documents against Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions' welding standards and identify the welding procedure and welder qualification.
• Support procurement by providing specifications and resolving technical issues for welding-related items.
• Select the welding process and prepare the WPS matrix from project drawings, BOM and specifications.
• Prepare and qualify WPS and welders/operators, monitor their qualification tests, and maintain the WPS, PQR and welders register.
• Lead problem-solving on welding issues and train the welding team in best practices.
• Maintain welder performance and weld acceptance records within project limits.
• Select and estimate welding consumables and ensure the project is completed within the agreed timeframe and man-hours.
• Ensure safety, health and wellbeing of self and colleagues, and follow all health and safety protocols.

Required profile

• Degree in engineering (Welding, Materials or Metallurgy) or equivalent from a recognised university.
• CWE (Certified Welding Engineer) or equivalent professional qualification.
• Minimum 10-15 years of experience in offshore pipelines, structures, piping and vessels, covering corrosion-resistant alloys and sour services in engineering, fabrication and installation.
