Principal Safety Engineer

About the role

The Principal Safety Engineer leads safety assurance across all engineering phases, ensuring that HSE standards are fully integrated into design and execution for complex oil & gas, petrochemical and LNG projects.

Key responsibilities

• Provide leadership and assurance during concept, FEED, detailed design and execution stages.
• Drive implementation of company and international HSE standards and best practices.
• Lead hazard identification and risk assessment studies such as HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA and SIL.
• Develop safety philosophies, quantitative risk assessments, fire‑and‑explosion analyses and functional‑safety lifecycle activities.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and clients to ensure regulatory compliance and ALARP risk reduction.
• Act as technical authority, mentor junior engineers, review deliverables, support audits and safety cases, and promote continuous HSE improvement.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Process or Safety Engineering (Master’s highly desirable).
• Chartered Engineer status or equivalent professional registration preferred.
• Relevant certifications such as NEBOSH Diploma, TÜV Functional Safety Engineer (IEC 61508/61511), CSP or IOSH membership.
• Extensive HSE/Process Safety experience in upstream, midstream, downstream, petrochemical or LNG sectors.
• Proven leadership on major capital projects (FEED, EPC, brownfield) and experience with international clients and regulators.

Required skills

• HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, SIL studies.
• Process Safety Management frameworks (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119, CCPS RBPS).
• Quantitative Risk Assessment, fire and explosion analysis.
• Functional safety lifecycle (IEC 61508/61511).
• Safety case development and audit support.
