Project Associate (Cultural Mediator)

About the role

The International Organization for Migration is seeking a Project Associate (Cultural Mediator) to support its Assistance Programme by facilitating communication and cultural mediation with Afghan evacuees.

Key responsibilities

• Provide interpretation in Dari and/or Pashto and English for IOM staff and Afghan evacuees.
• Accompany guests to appointments (e.g., medical visits) and offer translation support.
• Perform informal written translations between English and Dari/Pashto under tight deadlines.
• Maintain confidentiality of paperwork in line with data‑protection rules.
• Organise and deliver cultural awareness sessions for Protection/MHPSS and partner staff.
• Assist the Complaint and Feedback Mechanism team with interpretation and translation as needed.

Required profile

• High school diploma with five years relevant experience, or a bachelor’s degree in a related field with three years experience.
• Experience working with at‑risk communities, migration assistance, and in fast‑paced multicultural environments.
• Prior interpretation and/or translation experience, especially in Dari, Pashto and English.
• Commitment to humanitarian principles, gender, age and diversity‑sensitive approaches.

Required skills

• Excellent translation and interpretation skills between English, Dari and Pashto.
• Strong interpersonal and communication abilities in multicultural settings.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office software packages.
• Flexibility to work beyond normal schedules, including day/evening/night shifts.
